People of both India and the USA have been happy and enthusiastic about the personal relationship between Trump and Prime Minister Modi. Both countries have arranged high-level rally to show respect and highlight the friendship between the head of the countries. Donald Trump and Prime Minister Modi have tweeted appreciative words about each other many times which gave a new height to the Indo-US relationship which increased the warmth and camaraderie between the two countries. But when you see the result of Trump's approach to India as well as to Indian Americans you will see both of the parts are short-sighted and counterproductive. Some policies of Trump such as zero-sum, winner takes all worldviews have been hampered the Indian priorities on trade, energy, defense, and immigration. Due to this many issues arose when it came to creating good cooperation between two countries. Right after winning the high-voltage US election, Joe Biden promises to solve these issues and to do better. The zeal of Joe Biden to make sure that Indian Americans gets their value in the USA as well as to improve trade relation with India shows India can reap many benefits from the outcome of this election. When Joe Biden was Vice President during the regime of Barack Obama from 2009 to 2017, he implemented many foreign policies that had given top-level priority to India and created a strong partnership between the two countries. Therefore, it can be said that Joe Biden's support for India can be seen when he was in the Senate position because even in 2008 Joe Biden's sole effort secured the approval of the US Congress of US India civil nuclear agreement. Likewise, Joe Biden played an important role when he was in the Obama administrations to create a good relationship between the US and India.
This year's US presidential election was very exciting and we had to wait for few days to get the actual result. We all were aware of some facts about Trump Modi's friendship and how these two leaders pampered each other on social media platforms as well as in some high voltage rallies. But did their friendship truly helped built good US India trade relations, the answer is no because due to various tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Indian imports our companies suffered a lot? Furthermore, Trump's immigration policy and several kinds of strict laws made US universities less attractive for Indian students, and also Indian workers who were in the US suffered a lot. But if we compare the trade policy of the Obama Biden administration, we can conclude that those policies favored Indian companies. Besides, if we see the immigration policy of the Obama Biden administration, we can easily say they favored Indians more than any other country. Therefore, Indians can expect something much better from Biden as his Vice President is Kamala Harris who is Indian by birth.
As we all know that both India and the US have good quality and robust trade relationships which have a value of more than 142 billion dollars. Although both India and the US had some long-standing disputes Obama and Biden's administration worked very efficiently to make sure they counter all the differences. Due to this reason, both India and the US have announced some valuable progress on many kinds of trade issues such as measures in intellectual property rights, bilateral investment, and technology. The Obama Biden administration has also persuaded India without any pressure to sign many international agreements such as Paris Climate Accords. This has created huge cooperation between India's US when it comes to deal with clean energy and counter climate change cooperation. When Donald Trump came into power, unfortunately, he hampered all the hard work done by the Obama Biden administration. He has hardly given any focus on trade deficit in products as well as imposed tariffs on goods of Indian imports. The low focus on controlling the trade deficit of both the countries by Trump has hampered the well-created India US trade relation which consists of services, foreign direct investment, energy, defense sales, etc. Even when the Trump administration has withdrawn its support from Paris Climate Accords it hampered all the promises made by the Obama Bidens administration to India on clean energy cooperation. Many people saw the visit of President Trump's visit to India in February 2020 as a big optics but that did not make any differences in many trade deals that he promised. Hence, we can expect something more at least better than the Trump administration as compared to Joe Biden's administration.
Immigration is another major issue that creates a strong relationship between India and the US and it is quite evident from Trump's policy that he worked on solving many issues regarding immigration. He showed immense respect towards Indian immigrates. But the approach of the Trump administration has been xenophobic, chaotic as well as consists of many hardcore rules and regulations. His administration has been created many hurdles on the path of legal immigrates when it comes to education, work qualification, and family ties. This has created some problems for Indian immigrants in the US. India is the largest recipient of HIB visas that means they can work in any US company and also can hold high offices without any discrimination. And it is a fact many US companies consider Indians as talented and valuable as we can provide results in a very short duration. Until 2016 the trend of Indian immigrants working in the US was high but due to some strict rules imposes by Trump Indians suffered a lot. There are some other issues also regarding the immigration policies of Trump which created problems for India Immigrants. As per data, India comes in the second position as the supplier of foreign students to the US. The policy of Trump regarding the F 1 student visa category also hampered this trend. Due to this reason, the number of students going to the US for the study has decreased a lot which also included Indians. Many US universities give preferences and value to Indian talents but some actions like this of Trump made the US less attractive to qualified Indian students. But if we compare Obama Biden's administration policy Indian nationals had got many benefits. As per the then H1B visa holders who came to the US for work their wife could also get visas to stay with them which reduced the financial burden on the families to get the green card. Furthermore, the Obamas administration had also come up with some new reforms which decrease the hardship of applying for a visa such as making easy procedure. This created flexibility for the Indian students and Indian nationals who were there in the US. Hence, we can expect the same kind of policies from the Joe Bidens administration. Also, Kamala Harris the elected Vice President who is an Indian born hence we can expect that Indians are going to get the best priority. From defense to trade relation New Delhi can expect something better from the US which they never got from the Trump administration.
